Hon. Justice Richard Buteera flagging off the Court of Appeal Session at Mbale High Court

The Deputy Chief Justice, Hon. Justice Richard Buteera, on Monday October 14, 2022, flagged off a Court of Appeal Session at Mbale High Court.

The appeals session which will consist of three days' active court hearings will handle 47 matters.

The 47 are; 25 Murder Appeals, 13 Aggravated Defilement, five Aggravated Robbery, two Manslaughter and two Rape cases.

The Session is being presided over by Hon. Lady Justice Hellen Obura, Hon. Lady Justice Catherine Bamugemereire, Hon. Justice Christopher Madrama.

Addressing justice actors at the Court, the Deputy Chief Justice said such platforms are useful in sharing the progress they have made in the area of administration of justice as members of justice institutions, and also for them to share their experiences and challenges.

He noted that the Judiciary by the nature of its work, cannot deliver justice alone and can only be effective if other justice institutions are effectively executing their mandates.

Hon. Justice Buteera stressed the need to continue having such engagements in order to serve the public better.

The Senior Resident Judge, Hon. Justice Godfrey Namundi expressed his gratitude to Judiciary management for giving the Court a facelift. This, he said, has shown what a High Court should look like.

During the interaction, the stakeholders who included advocates, representatives of Police, Prisons, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, city and district leaders thanked the Court for cordial relations that exist among them.

Among the concerns raised was the issue of increase in cases of murder, suicide and petty theft. The issue of transportation for juvenile offenders was also raised. The Mbale Remand Home serves Karamoja, Teso and Bugisu areas and it had only one van assigned to it which is insufficient.

The meeting was attended by the Mbale High Court Circuit Resident Judge, Hon. Lady Justice Margaret Apiny, Court of Appeal Deputy Registrar; HW Lillian Bucyana, the Private Legal Secretary to the Deputy Chief Justice, HW Dr Alex Mushabe, Mbale High Court Assistant Registrar, HW Moses Kagoda, Chief Magistrate, HW Susan Awidi, among other stakeholders.
